Autumn Term
We have a great first topic planned to begin Year 2 which focuses on the book ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We will be reading lots of The Lighthouse Keeper stories about Mr Grinling and hearing all about the different things he gets up to. As well as this in our Design and Technology lessons we will be designing and making deliciously healthy sandwiches. In Science we will be focusing on the features of a healthy lifestyle. In History we will be learning all about Grace Darling and the explorer David Livingstone and his explorations.
In the second half of the Autumn term we are focusing on the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. In History this term we will be learning about the epitaph of Bognor Regis and we hope to take a trip there to find out more. In Art we are focusing on a unit of work where we will be sketching a candle flame.
Spring Term
In the Spring term we have many more exciting things to look forward to. This will include looking at animal habitats in Science and Geography. The first half term will focus on the book ‘The Hodgeheg’ and animals of the UK. In Geography we are focusing on the features of a park using a map and photos.
The second half of the Spring term will see a focus on a story called ‘Masha and the Firebird’. This book, written by Margaret Bateson-Hill, features traditional Russian fairy tale characters: a magical firebird who is the guardian of the eggs of the elements and a vicious witch called Baba Yaga. During this second half of the Spring term, we will also be learning all about The Great Fire of London in our History lessons.
Summer Term
In the Summer term we have many more interesting topics. We will be reading the book ‘Tell me a Dragon’ in the first half of the Summer Term and the children will have the opportunity to complete many dragon related writing tasks.
In the second half of the Summer Term we will be continuing our animal theme and focus on African animals. During this term we hope to visit Marwell Zoo, where we will have the opportunity to see some African animals. In English we will be reading the book ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’.
Reading
We will be continuing with our Little Wandle scheme for Phonics and Reading that the children started when they were in Year 1. The same system will apply, that children will be given a new book each week at school, which they will read and discuss three times with the teacher/TA. Then it will be sent home at the end of the week. In addition to this, children will be able to choose a book from the book corner to take home. This book can be changed as often as you like.
Hearing your child read at home for about 10 minutes each day makes such an incredible difference to their learning. You are invited to make comments about your child’s reading in the ‘Reading Diary’, but please refrain from using green pen, because when your child is heard read at school, the adult reading with them writes a comment in green pen. We will be continuing with the reading badges, so please remember to sign the sheet at the back of their reading diary.
PE
Our PE days will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure your child has the correct kit in school- black shorts, red/black T-shirt, trainers or plimsolls, tracksuit trousers and jumper (for when it starts to get chilly). Please make sure they have shoes that fit. Long hair should be tied back. It is the responsibility of children or parents to remove ear studs for PE lessons. If children have newly pierced ears, then surgical tape should be worn to cover the studs; this needs to be provided by parents.
Most importantly, we want your child to love coming to school. If you need to speak to us for a quick chat then please feel free to catch your child’s teacher at the end of the day. If you have a query requiring more than just a quick chat then please ask at the office for an appointment with us.
