WELCOME TO YEAR 3
In Year 3 we have three classes.
Mrs Hopkins and Mrs Field teach 3F, Mr Tite teaches 3T and Miss Gorman teaches 3G.
Our wonderful teaching assistants are Mrs Cooper, Mrs Stone and Mrs King
In the Autumn Term we kick off our fabulous learning journey looking back into Ancient Rome and Pompeii, reading our class text 'Escape from Pompeii'. We will have a chance to look at some artefacts from back in the day and will be making a trip to The Novium Museum to learn about the impact Romans had on our local towns. In History we will continue to learn about the Roman Empire and their invasion of Britain, learning about Boudicca, Julius Cesar and Emperor Titus. The Science topics will focus on Rocks and Soil, where we will be investigating the different types of rocks and how they are formed. Our study of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius will help with this understanding. We will also learn about the formation of soil, exploring the soil on our own school grounds. The class text for the second half of the Autumn term will be The Firework Maker’s Daughter which takes us into the cultural depths of Asia. This will lead us in to some learning in Geography about how our world is divided into different continents and countries.
To begin the Spring Term, our main focus is on The Iron Man another classic text. Children will be writing newspaper reports and filming a TV news reports. We will be looking at the artist Michelle Reader who specialises in sculptures; there will be a big focus on the importance of recycling. In DT we will be making pizzas and designing boxes that will keep them warm until the children get them home to enjoy. As we move into Spring 2, we will pick up our new text 'The Animals of Farthing Wood'.
To end their time at Edward Bryant, we have a fantastic summer term planned for the children. We will start our Literacy topic, focusing Treasure Island and have a visit from the History Man to give us an exciting insight into the life of a pirate. We then move onto learn about the Stone Age, as we look closely at artifacts from that time.
The children will have PE lessons twice a week. However, we ask that the children have their kits in school all week. Please help us by labelling every piece of clothing your child brings to school.
Please continue to support your child with the homework set each week. Weekly homework includes reading, learning spelling and practising times tables. It is, of course, vital that you hear your child read as often as possible. We ask the children to get at least three signatures in their reading diaries a week.
We would also really welcome any volunteers to read with the children. Please come and see us if you would be able to help us with this! The children also receive spellings and maths homework every week. There will be an informal spelling test every Friday and Maths homework will be set online on Mathletics.
In addition to this, a Home Learning project will be set half-termly.
We hope the children really enjoy Year 3. Please book an appointment to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns.
