In the Autumn Term we kick off our fabulous learning journey looking back into the Stone Age and reading a classic text Stig of the Dump. We will have a chance to look at some artefacts from back in the day and continuing the theme by following through a unit of work in Art on fossils. The Science topics will focus on Forces, where we will be investigating push and pull forces and then moving on to the topic of Light. In Geography we will be looking at how the Earth is divided into hemispheres, continents, countries, towns and cities. The class text for the second half of the Autumn term will be The Firework Maker’s Daughter which takes us into the cultural depths of Asia.
To begin the Spring Term, our main focus is on The Iron Man another classic text. Children will be writing newspaper reports and filming a TV news reports. We will be looking at the artist Michelle Reader who specialises in sculptures; there will be a big focus on the importance of recycling. In DT we will be making pizzas and designing boxes that will keep them warm until the children get them home to enjoy.
To end their time at Edward Bryant, we have a fantastic summer term planned for the children. We will start our Literacy topic, focusing Treasure Island and have a visit from the History Man to give us an exciting insight into the life of a pirate. We then move onto learn about the Romans and how they lived. Geographically we will be looking at where Rome is and be learning all about volcanoes. As a finale to the topic, the children will enact a dramatic performance with our class Roman play where parents will be invited to come and watch.
The children will have PE lessons twice a week. However, we ask that the children have their kits in school all week. Please help us by labelling every piece of clothing your child brings to school.
Please continue to support your child with the homework set each week. Weekly homework includes reading, learning spelling and practising times tables. It is, of course, vital that you hear your child read as often as possible. We ask the children to get at least three signatures in their reading diaries a week.
We would also really welcome any volunteers to read with the children. Please come and see us if you would be able to help us with this! The children also receive spellings and maths homework every week. There will be an informal spelling test every Friday and Maths homework will be set online on Mathletics.
In addition to this, a Home Learning project will be set half-termly.
We hope the children really enjoy Year 3. Please book an appointment to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns.
