Autumn term
We have a super term planned for the Autumn. Our topic is Space. As part of this, we learn about the history of space travel starting with the Wright brothers. Also, we learn about the planets and read ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We hope to visit Winchester Science Museum later in the term to support our learning.
After half term, we begin to read ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C.S Lewis and begin to look at the effects of climate change.
We will, of course, be very busy in other areas of the curriculum and look forward to inviting parents to the end of term Christmas carol concert.
Spring term
In the Spring term, our topic is ‘The Anglo-Saxons’. During this topic, we discover why the Angles, Saxons and Jutes came to Britain, how they lived and why that period came to an end. We hope to go to Butser Farm to help us understand their way of life and listen to a retelling of Beowulf which we will have learnt about in School.
In the later half of the term, we will be reading ‘Brightstorm’ (a new text to Year 5) and we are so excited to share it with the children.
In other areas of the curriculum, we will be creating our own wheeled vehicles in DT and studying forces in Science.
Summer term
To end their time in Year 5 at Edward Bryant, we have a fantastic Summer term planned for the children. We will be studying the Tudor period of history, focusing on William Shakespeare and his work ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Our grand finale will be a production of this, which you will all be invited to see.
We ask that the children have their PE kits in school all week. Please help us by labelling every piece of clothing your child brings to school.
It is, of course, vital that you hear your child read as often as possible. We ask the children to get at least three signatures in their reading diaries a week.
The children also receive spellings (to be tested on a Thursday) and Timestables homework (via TTRS) every week.
Finally, the children will receive ‘Home Learning Journal’ homework which is usually topic based. This is an opportunity for the children to show their creativity and have more ownership of their learning.
We hope the children really enjoy Year 5. Please book an appointment to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any queries or questions.
